Ramadan // Meriem Ahmed.

If fasting was limited
to the food in my stomach
and the water I hold to my lips
then I guarantee that I have fasted
each long day of this month’s holy nights.

All the while ignoring
all the unkind words
that slip my mouth
and the prayers
I oversleep.

I fear that I won’t ever learn
that the Ramadan moon not only asks us
to be mindful of what we put into our bodies.

It also asks that we shine its light
on what we ask of our bodies to do and say
not just this month, but the whole year round.
